How Much Car Insurance Do I Need

How much car insurance coverage you need may sound like a boring question. This story may help you figure that out. It is not so much a dollar amount, as it is the number and quality of insurance benefits that can help you and your family if something really bad happens on the road some day.

A story

Think about this.

Put yourself in this person’s shoes:

Imagine it is a cool, crisp Saturday morning in the Fall. You awaken and decide to go to a few early garage sales to buy some used clothes for the kids.

After a cup of coffee, you look at the ads for yard sales in the newspaper. Carefully (so as not to spend too much money on gas) you lay out a route that lets you hit most of the tag sale sites by driving more or less in a circle.

The next thing you must do, of course, is arrange the money in your wallet. Since you will likely be spending more one dollar bills than anything else, this should be in the front. You fill your jean pockets with excess change from on top of the dresser in the bedroom. Grabbing a flashlight (in case the sale site is dimly lit), you are all set to head out in search of some new clothing outfits for the rug rats.

Heading out

There isn’t too much traffic on the road, which is good, considering that you need to be looking at the addresses with one eye and watching the road with the other. If the sale looks too junkie and not worth stopping for, then you won’t. So you are also scanning the front yard for that one thing that calls out to you, and causes you to stop and park.

On to the next sale

The next stop on your route is a sale that promises to be fantastic. The cars are already parked for it a block or more away, and people are hiking toward the sale. You decide to turn left and park on a side road.

Oh no

Just as you are making a slow left turn so that you can park, an oncoming car on the main road appears out of nowhere.

He plows directly into the right hand door of your car on the passenger side.

The impact sends you car yards backwards and your neck whips back against the head rest.

It’s a blur

Dozens of people stream from the sidewalk to assist you, pointing at the other car and that driver. He appears to be drunk or intoxicated from the night before.

Someone calls the police.

They show up quickly, sirens blaring.

You are still reeling from the impact to your car, and trying to process the whole event.

What about your kids. Did your spouse give them breakfast at home?

What if you would have died in the crash?

Your thoughts race and ramble, without rhyme or reason. You want to be coherent, but it isn’t easy.

Scene of the crash

The officer is measuring skid marks, looking at the two crushed cars, and saying something about how it’s a miracle that you were not killed, given how fast the other car was coming at yours.

Driver ID

The second officer from the police car is collecting license plate numbers, looking at drivers licenses, and asking for the vehicle insurance papers from each driver’s glove compartment.

No insurance ?

The drunk guy just shakes his head like he does not understand the officer’s request. With the party guy’s permission, the policeman looks for himself in the glove compartment of the other car.

He pulls out a flask of what looks like vodka, but, uh oh, no insurance card or anything.

The guy has no freaking car insurance and he just totaled your car, and almost killed you? Un-freakin-believable. How could this be true? Who knows if you will need to stay in the hospital. No ambulance is there yet, but you can hear them coming. Your whole body aches, but most of all you are concerned about your head, brain, neck and your spine. How could this be happening?

What happens if I have no insurance

They are putting the guy who caused the accident in handcuffs.

He’s being changed with drunk driving (DUI, aka DWI).

He’s being changed with causing the accident.

He’s being charged with driving without insurance.

He’s in a heap of trouble, and he hardly even knows it yet. He looks like his head is full of cotton, and he only understand a fraction of what the officer is saying as he reads the guy his Miranda rights.

What saved you

You now start to realize that two things have saved you today.

The first is the grace of God that somehow protected you from being killed this morning. Your prayers of thanks are instantaneous, spontaneous, genuine, and heartfelt. You keep seeing pictures of your kids in your mind. Thank you, God.

The second thing that has saved you today, you realize, is your own car insurance coverage. No doubt it which will kick in if the drunk driver really turns out to be uninsured. You have a AAA rated car coverage company, and have no worries about whether they will be there for you. You know they will.

Having the best car insurance

Up until now you never thought much about car insurance, or why auto coverage matters, or what good vehicle insurance really is if a person is a cautious and safe driver. You knew you had a great company, but up until now, you never appreciated the importance of that. But now you know. It all becomes clear.

Insurance isn’t for some hypothetical rainy day.

Insurance isn’t something irrelevant to your life.

Insurance can be the most important thing in your world, and your family’s, when the time comes that you need to benefit from it. For you, that day, you realize, is today.

Alive to tell about it

You look around at the car wreckage on the street. Your seatbelt- thank goodness you always wear it. Your car insurance papers- thank goodness you have that coverage. Thank goodness you are going to survive this horrible traffic accident.

What began as an innocent excursion on a garage sale morning, has suddenly become a vivid life lesson in why you need car insurance. If anyone ever asks why do I need car insurance, you will have this story to tell them.

Bottom line

Buy the maximum coverage you can afford. Purchase auto coverage only  from one of the best car insurance companies. A company that you know will endure, and that has a reputation for being a quality insurance provider.

You can look for budget vehicle coverage.

You can shop insurance carriers for the cheapest car insurance.

However, the true bottom line from this story, is that you really, really, really need to get coverage you can trust from a reliable good car insurance provider.
